The first organic (not a paid ad or shopping) result for “protein powder” was an article called “The 7 Best Types of Protein Powder”. The article was a very in-depth explanation about the different types of protein powder and what each type is best suited for.

In the second search, the user narrows the type of protein powder with the word “natural” and a different set of results comes up.

The first organic result for this search takes the user to the website of a company that makes all-natural protein powders. We land on a category page for protein powder products where they have just the right number of keywords sprinkled into some of the most important places on the page and in the html code.

Isn’t it just easier to buy ads?

It’s true that the quicker-results alternative to getting traffic is pay-per-click advertising, specifically Google AdWords and Bing. But optimizing your site will do two things:

  • Give your site visitors the confidence to do business with you (remember E-A-T).
  • You’re going for organic traffic when you optimize, so the results you get are free. (Ok, they’re mostly free if you’re planning to hire a consultant to do the heavy lifting.)

How long do results take?

SEO is a long-term strategy. In the early days (before 2004), it was often easy to rank for a keyword within days or weeks. But now that more than 20 years have passed, search engines are very good at detecting whether you’re trying to fake it or take a shortcut, and your site can be penalized, sometimes even permanently, for doing that.

The best approach is quality content and quality links, and that takes both time and money. It’s an investment in your site. The amount of time it takes to rank any particular site for a specific keyword depends on how much search engine authority your site already has, and how competitive or difficult that keyword is to rank for.
